On Shoe Sizing Guide: Do They Run Small?

On Running shoes fit true to size, but they are cut narrow — particularly through the midfoot and toe box — so buyers with wide or medium-wide feet often find On's standard D width tighter than expected for the correct size. Start with your usual US size, but if your foot is even slightly wide, check half a size up to compensate for the narrow last.

Across our data On true to size: 12% of wearers report it runs small, 72% true to size and 16% large.

On sizing philosophy

On was founded in Switzerland in 2010 around a patented CloudTec® sole technology — pods on the outsole that collapse on impact and stiffen at push-off. Swiss precision engineering extends to the fit: On lasts are calibrated for a performance runner's foot, which typically means a narrower midfoot and toe box than a lifestyle shoe designed for a broader demographic. The brand does not offer a dedicated wide grade.

The upper materials reinforce the narrow feel: On's engineered mesh (Helion, Cloudtec) is thin and relatively inelastic compared to the adaptive knits used by Hoka or Brooks. What you feel on first try is close to what you will feel after break-in, which is unusual in running shoes and makes the initial fit decision especially important.

How On models differ

There is no single "On size" — different lines are graded on different lasts. Here is how the key models compare:

Cloudflow / Cloudmonster (road running)
The running flagships — true to size for length, but narrow through the midfoot. The Cloudmonster has a wider toe box than the Cloudflow and is more forgiving for wider feet.
Cloud 5 / Cloudnova (lifestyle)
Slightly more volume than the pure-performance models but still narrower than lifestyle shoes from other brands. True to size; wide feet may need half a size up.
Cloudsurfer (versatile trainer)
The most accommodating On silhouette in terms of forefoot volume; true to size for most foot widths.

Practical sizing advice

If you normally wear US 9, start by checking On in US 9 — but check US 9.5 if your foot is wide or you have a wide forefoot, since there is no wide-width option.

If your feet are wide

On does not offer a wide (2E or 4E) grade on any mainstream model. Wide-footed buyers who need On — perhaps for its rocker geometry or CloudTec cushioning — should size up half a size to compensate for the narrow last, and accept that the heel may feel slightly less secure as a trade-off.

If you wear US 9, start by checking On in US 9

This table starts from the US size you wear in a true-to-size brand, converts it to a foot length, and applies On's measured fit so you can see the first size to check — plus the UK, EU and CM equivalents.

On recommended size by the US size you normally wear (fit offset +0).
You normally wear (US) Foot length Check On (US) UK EU CM
US 7 246mm US 7 6 37 24.5
US 8 254mm US 8 7 38 25.5
US 9 262mm US 9 8 39 26
US 10 271mm US 10 9 41 27
US 11 279mm US 11 10 42 28
US 12 288mm US 12 11 43 29

EU sizes are always rounded to a whole size — there is no exact half-size equivalent. The recommended On size applies this brand's average fit; individual models still vary, so check the model notes above.
